THE CHEMISTRY OF POWDER AND EXPLOSIVES
- by Tenney L. Davis, March 1943
Originally this book was a text at the
illustrious Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This is probably the most thorough
examination of explosive
chemistry available in one volume. To quote the book itself, "The aim of
the book has been to describe as clearly and interestingly as possible and
as fully as seemed profitable the modes of behavior, both physical and
chemical, of explosive substances."
Within this volume are formulas for fireworks, including information
on how to achieve different colors, description on development and manufacture
of Black Powder as well as Smokeless Powder, and entire chapters on Nitro
Compounds, Nitric Compounds, Dynamite and Detonators & Primers. This
is the bible of explosives and explosive compounds. The only fault of
this book is that it is a bit technical in some aspects of chemical analysis and
explanation. We did, of course, mention it was originally written as
an MIT textbook. 5X8, 490pp, illustrated
